The Hidden Cost of Rewriting Everything You Send

Nobody schedules time for rewriting. It happens in the gaps: the message rephrased four times before sending, the paragraph rebuilt because the opening was wrong. Individually trivial, collectively enormous.

The cost is attention, not minutes

Two minutes rewriting an email is not really two minutes. It is a context switch, a re-read, and a small decision about tone — and it lands in the middle of whatever you were actually doing.

The recovery cost is what makes it expensive, which is why a day of light writing can feel like a day of nothing done.

Most rewrites are decisions in disguise

When a sentence resists three attempts, the problem is rarely the sentence. It is that you haven't decided what you're asking for, or you're avoiding saying it plainly.

Stop rewording and answer the underlying question. The sentence usually writes itself afterwards.

Fix the opener, keep the rest

A draft that feels wrong throughout is often only wrong at the top. The first line sets the tone, and everything after it is dragged along.

Rewrite the opening alone and reread. More often than not the body was fine.
